Kerry aims to help local breweries

Good news if you like local beer. Senator John Kerry is trying to help out small breweries.

Senator Kerry has introduced new legislation that would lower the beer excise tax for small breweries.

There are over 1,500 small breweries in America, many of those are right here in Massachusetts.

Right now, small breweries have to pay $7.00 per barrel on the first 60,000 barrels they produce each year. This plan would reduce that tax to $3.50 per barrel.

Randy Wood, the General Manager of the Northampton Brewery, told us that would save them about $3,500 a year. Wood said “That could turn a part time position possibly into a full time position within a year.”

And for other small breweries that produce about 10,000 barrels a year that would save them about $35,000 a year. Senator Kerry is hoping this could help these companies add more jobs.
